Choosing your bathroom

The correct choice of equipment is essential if your bath/shower room installation is to work correctly. Listed below are a few things that you should expect to be asked when you visit a showroom before purchasing any equipment.

Low Pressure

Many houses in London are low pressure. This means that the tanks in the loft feed the house with no assistance from pumps, etc. Sometimes this is called a gravity system.

High Pressure

The mains pressure from the road runs these systems. They are also called unvented systems. A special cylinder is installed for the hot water with the cold water coming directly from the mains feed to the house.

Pumped System

All hot water pumped systems must run from an air-free supply directly from the cylinder for a trouble-free operation. These systems have a tank in the loft and a normal hot water cylinder but are boosted to very high pressure by a pump or pumps. Care must be taken when choosing equipment for this type of installation as some shower controls have sprung devices in the body and will not function unless the pumping system is negative head.

Negative Head

Negative head systems have a pressure vessel mounted on the pump and are usually installed for supplying hot and cold water above the height of the tanks. This is ideal for 'high pressure' showers etc in loft conversions.

Combination Systems

The hot water from a combination boiler is fed from the mains so there is high pressure but often a low flow rate of water. Some of these installations are combined with tank-fed cold water systems, which gives an imbalance of pressure at the showers, and advice should be taken before buying your equipment.

Unvented hot water cylinders must only be installed by a registered installer.

Ward Brothers will be happy to offer advice regarding any of the above.
